Virginia State notched its second win of the season in a 34-7 rout of Johnson C. Smith. The Trojans’ offense did need much time to get to work, taking a 7-0 lead on Jevon LaPierre’s five-yard touchdown run with 12:25 to go in the opening period. A little less than four minutes later, Virginia State would increase their advantage to 14-0 when Demetrius Strickland scored on a fifteen-yard run with 8:33 left in the opening period.
The second quarter was an offensive quagmire with the teams combining for a stretch for the first 4 minutes in which 4 consecutive drives ended in turnovers ( 1 fumble and 3 interceptions). With the exception of a missed VSU field goal attempt, every offensive drive in the period ended in a turnover or a punt.
Nicholas Woolfolk’s 42-yard field goal with 12:36 left in the third gave Virginia State a 17-0 lead. Saint Augustine would finally get into the scoring column when Jeremiah Miller scored from one-yard out to draw the Falcons to within ten at 17-7. Virginia State would push their lead back to seventeen when Cordelral Cook connected with Marque Phillips on an eight-yard touchdown pass to make the score 24-7.
In the fourth quarter VSU tacked on ten more points, from a 22-yard field goal from Woolfolk and a Deme Strickland eight-yard run, to bring the score to its final mark at 34-7.
Virginia State (2-1) returns to the gridiron September 28 when they will host Johnson C. Smith. Kickoff time is set for 6 p.m. EST.Now 0-3, Saint Augustine’s will look to get in the win column when they head to Bowie, MD to take on Bowie State with a kickoff time of 3 p.m. EST.
